Behind the Street Name - Brownfield

March 2, 2023

Did you know that every street in Lucas is named after a soldier or nurse who fought during World War 1?

These brave service personnel are commemorated along the Avenue of Honour, and we want to share their stories with the Lucas community.

Brownfield Drive, located in the Lucas Platinum neighbourhood, honours Edward Brownfield.

Edward James Brownfield (SN 4147) was born in Ballarat and attended the Eureka Street State School. He was 19 years old, single and a labourer when he enlisted in the 14th Infantry Battalion on July 9th 1915.

He embarked on December 29th aboard the Demosthenes and joined his unit in France on June 8th 1916.

Less than a month later he was killed in action on July 3rd 1916 whilst in the trenches near Fromelles. He was 19 years of age, is buried in the Brewery Orchard Cemetery in France and remembered on the honour board of the Eureka Street State School.
